Monster Oddities Profile 245: Quootux

- Sighted in Greenfield, IN. "Freida's Flea Market"

"Stated that he likes to collect 1950's kitch items, especially porcelain owls. He owns over 120 of them."

This is the start of what I hope will be a new larger personal project for me. I'd like to produce enough of these to print in a book form as a kind of "monsters among us" sort of book where it would showcase different aliens, monsters, demons, ghouls, etc. that live and work in our neighborhoods and have hobbies and phobias, likes, dislikes, etc. I need feedback everyone. Good idea for a book? Want to see more of them?

That sounds like an AWESOME idea! I always get stuck when I try to draw monster or aliens so I get jealous when I see others sketch them so easily. I think a book of these would be pretty funny.

I find myself drawing too many of these (and Halloween artwork too. God, I draw a lot of that as well) and I've always been so self-critical about wanting to broaden my subject matter and really try and "grow as an artist. Recently, I've started to ask, "Why?!" Why not just wallow in what you're good at and really tap into what people like in your work and stop trying to please everyone? That's my new goal and I'm GOING FOR IT! Draw for me and those that want to come along for the ride can...the rest of you...go watch someone else! Whoohoo!

Thanks for the FAV BTW.

That's TOTALLY what I'm going through! I should probably practice drawing guys, children, animals, etc but drawing pinups is just really fun again right now. Why not follow the whim and see where it takes you? If you feel like drawing something else, then you will, but forcing yourself can be frustrating enough to make you NOT want to draw. So just keep cranking them out until you don't have any more left in you!

How many do you think should be in a book? I'm either thinking that 50 -100 would be a nice round figure. I've been struggling with the whole "book" thing. It's a big commitment and by the time you fork over the cash to get one printed, rent space at a con or show, then actually sit down to sell the thing, you WANT people to WANT TO BUY IT for the price you're forced to sell it for. Any experience or stories to impart about art books or sketch books and their production/selling? What have you sold with your artwork on it?

Do it at lulu.com. It's a print on demand service, like cafepress. Meaning, you make the book then put it up for sale there. You can even add an ISBN number to it so it can be listed on Amazon. Since you're the person creating the book you get a sample copy for free to check everything then you get a discount when you buy multiple copies. Obviously the more you buy, the cheaper it gets, but you can buy 20 or 30 for a convention then sell any leftovers online and offer to do a personalized sketch in it. I'm putting together my own art book there for next year. I'm thinking of it just for myself, a collection of my favourite work from the past 10 years. I'll get myself a copy for keeps then order a few for the next con I go to. If you think of doing it just for your own amusement or reference then it takes some of the pressure of trying to please others off. ~SAGG did his art book at lulu and I'm SUPER jealous of it. The print quality is top notch!

Thanks for the heads p about lulu.com. I'd heard of them as well as kapow printing but hadn't set my heart on one or the other. I'm jonesing to get started on my book. I already started working on a few more sketches for it.
What cons are you planning on exhibiting at next year? Maybe we could split a booth or something if you would be interested in that sort of thing?

~SAGG and I just do one convention a year, sharing a table, and it's the big FanExpo in Toronto every August.

How's the sales at that show? I've never been so I'm not familiar with it.
